FARIDKOT: Gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, who was brought on transit remand by Punjab Police from New Delhi, on Wednesday was remanded in seven-day police custody by a Mansa court.
Bishnoi is the main suspect in the murder case of Punjabi singer and Congress leader Sidhu Moosewala who was shot dead on May 29 in the district.
The gangster was presented before the duty magistrate (judicial magistrate-jmic) following a medical check-up at a district civil hospital.
A special investigation team (SIT) of Punjab Police probing Moosewala’s murder told the court that Bishnoi is the main conspirator and his custodial interrogation is required for effective probe in the case.
A Delhi court on Tuesday had allowed Punjab Police to take the gangster to the state for questioning on transit remand.
The chief judicial magistrate at Mansa had issued an arrest warrant against Bishnoi on Monday.
After securing Bishnoi’s remand, Punjab Police shifted the gangster to the crime investigation agency (CIA) Kharar, in Mohali.
Moosewala was shot dead at Jawaharke village in Mansa district on May 29, a day after the state government pruned his security cover.
An autopsy report later claimed that the singer bore 19 bullet injury marks and would have died within 15 minutes.
Hours after the incident on May 29, Punjab director general of police (DGP) VK Bhawra said the killing was a result of gang rivalry and that Bishnoi’s gang and Canada-based gangster Goldy Brar appeared to be involved in the crime.
