43-year-old Borivali pedestrian flung in the air, killed, as speeding car hits him

MUMBAI: A 43-year-old pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run on Monday in Borivali. The victim, identified as Santosh Salgar, was walking around Link Road, when an unknown four-wheeler hit him at high speed at around 10.30pm.

The motorist fled the scene without taking Salgar to hospital. The impact of the crash was so strong that Salgar was flung several feet into the air before hitting the road. He suffered injuries to his head and eyes and was profusely bleeding, said a police officer.

Santosh was rushed to a hospital in Kandivali where he was pronounced dead. The MHB Colony Police have registered a case of rash driving and death due to negligence against the unknown driver under section 304 (a) of the Indian Penal Code.

The police said Santosh was an alcoholic. His wife, Priti, told the police that she had separated from him due to his addiction. The couple’s two children live with Priti. On Monday, around 11.45pm, Priti received a phone call from an acquaintan­ce that her husband was rushed to the hospital after being injured in a road accident.

Priti informed her father and rushed to the Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital at Kandivali. The police told her that according to eyewitness­es they found her estranged husband lying on the

Link Road in a pool of blood. The witness said that a large crowd had gathered on the south-bound arm of the Link Road.

In a separate accident, a 20-year-old biker, identified as Sahil Jilani Shaikh, who had skidded from his bike near Lokhandwal­a circle in Kandivali East on March 29, succumbed to his head injuries on Monday at the Copper Hospital.

The police said that Shaikh was speeding and riding his bike without a helmet when he skidded and fell on the road hitting his head. The passersby rushed him to the hospital where he was admitted.
