GREATER NOIDA: The Knowledge Park police on Monday arrested a cabbie allegedly involved in the death of a B.ED student, who had died in a road accident, in Greater Noida. The suspect was identified as Ranu Verma, 25, a resident of Mainpuri in Uttar Pradesh. He lived in a rented accommodation in Ghazipur in Delhi.

Police said Verma had allegedly hit the victim, 23-year-old Manju, and her friend, 22-yearold Neha, who they were riding a two-wheeler in the Knowledge Park area on Thursday. Manju died while Neha survived with injuries.

Varun Pawar, SHO Knowledge Park police station, said Manju was a resident of Roja Jalalpur village while Neha is a resident of Bisrakh. They were enrolled in the Bachelors in Education at Sharda University in Greater Noida.

Manju had left home on her two-wheeler for her university in the morning. She had picked up her friend on the way and had reached the Knowledge Park area when the incident occurred.

“When they reached near NASA roundabout, a cab coming from the wrong side collided with their vehicle from the front. A police team from Knowledge Park police station reached the spot and admitted them to a private hospital, where Manju was declared brought dead. Neha is admitted to the hospital and she is recovering,” Pawar said.

The police detained the cab driver and seized the cab. There was also a passenger in the cab who had told the police that the driver was allegedly talking on the phone when the accident took place.

A case has been registered against the suspect under Section 279 (rash driving), Section 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others), and Section 304-A (death due to negligence). “The victim’s family members were busy in performing the last rites of the deceased. They filed a complaint on Sunday after that the suspect was arrested. He was produced in court and sent to judicial custody,” Pawar said.
