GREATER NOIDA: The Greater Noida authority said Thursday it will start supplying Ganga water to households in the city by April-end, as work on the project is about to be completed. As of now, the water needs of the city are being met by ground water.

“We are about to complete the work on this mega project. The authority will soon start getting Ganga water supply from the Upper Ganga canal to meet drinking water needs,” said Narendra Bhooshan, chief executive officer of the Greater Noida authority.

The ₹ 291.77 crore project was started in 2010 and was scheduled for completion by 2013, but has missed several deadlines. In 2016, the authority set March 2018 as the deadline for this project.

Officials said the project had been delayed due to non-availability of land, as farmers had refused to give land needed for the pipeline. The issue was sorted last year when farmers’ land compensation demands were resolved.

At present, residents depend on groundwater for drinking, which is often saline and hard.

Officials said this time round, however, the authority is sure that it will be able to meet the stipulated deadline.

“Around 90% of the work for laying infrastructure is complete and the remaining will be done in the next two to three months. We have laid the pipeline, finished the water reservoir as well as small pending works,” said a Greater Noida authority official, not authorised to speak to the media.

Once functional, about 210 million litres daily (MLD) of Ganga water will be supplied to the 10 lakh residents in the city.

Work for the 17.9-km-long pipeline, needed to bring water from the Masuri-dehra Ganga Canal to the water treatment plant here that is under construction in Palla village of Greater Noida, was completed in January 2020. From the village, the water will be flowed 5.1 kilometres to be stored at the master reservoir in Knowledge Park-v, located behind the authority’s new administrative building.

“We hope that the Ganga water supply will be provided without much delay, as we have been waiting for so long to get quality drinking water,” said Vivek Raman, a resident of Gaur City, Greater Noida West.
