Home minister, L-G visit injured police personnel

NEW DELHI: Union home minister Amit Shah on Thursday visited two hospitals in Delhi to enquire about health of police officers who received injuries when a tractor parade by farmers on Republic Day descended into violence and chaos.

Delhi lieutenant governor Anil Baijal also called in on the injured, and directed officials to provide the best possible care to the police personnel.

On January 26, thousands of protesting farmers clashed with police at Red Fort, ITO crossing, and some other parts of west and central Delhi, leaving 394 security personnel with major and minor injuries.

The home minister, after interactin­g with several of the injured cops and treating doctors at the hospital, tweeted in Hindi: “Met courageous policemen of Delhi Police at hospital and prayed for their speedy recovery. The entire nation is proud of the courage and patience that the Delhi Police have displayed during the violence that took place on the Republic Day.”

Shah was accompanie­d by Union home secretary Ajay Bhalla and Delhi’s police commission­er SN Shrivastav­a.

The ministry of home affairs said in a statement that Shah visited two hospitals -- Shushrut Trauma Centre and Teerath Ram Hospital, both in the Civil Lines area — where some of the policemen were admitted.

Earlier in the morning, Shah met with senior ministry officials and Shrivastav­a and directed that strict action be taken against those behind the incidents of violence.

The Centre has provided an additional 15 companies (around 1,500 personnel) to the Delhi Police after January 26 violence. Until now, 6,000 troops of paramilita­ry forces were assisting the police at various borders of Delhi and if required, numbers can be increased, said an official.

LG Baijal also visited the Sushrut Trauma Centre. Aa statement issued by his office said that he wished police personnel a speedy recovery. The LG also called for restraint, and for people to maintain peace and harmony in the Capital, the statement added.
