Student gang-raped, friend beaten up

A 22-year-old medical student was allegedly gang-raped by a group of unidentifi­ed men near Lalithadri­pura on the outskirts of Mysuru, police said on Wednesday, adding that the gang also assaulted a male friend of the woman who tried to oppose them. According to police, the incident took place when the student, riding pillion with her male friend, was on her way to Chamundi Hills, around 13km from Mysuru, when a few people waylaid them on Tuesday evening. The gang initially demanded money, but when they found nothing, attacked her friend and dragged her to a place where they raped her, police said. At around 11pm, the two managed to reach the road and a few passers-by got them admitted to a hospital. A special team has been formed to investigat­e the case. The woman and her friend have both suffered severe injuries and are getting treated at a city hospital.

According to the police, the incident took place when the student, riding pillion to her friend, was on her way to Chamundi Hills, a tourist destinatio­n around 13km from Mysuru, when six men waylaid them on Tuesday evening. The gang initially demanded money, but when they found nothing, attacked her friend and dragged her to an isolated place where they committed the crime, police said.

“A student was allegedly gang-raped at Lalithadri­pura layout, Mysuru on 24th August. As per the complaint, six men committed the crime and also beat the girl’s friend. FIR has beem lodged in Alanahally Police Station. We have formed teams for investigat­ion of the case,” news agency ANI quoted Mysuru City Commission­er of Police Chandragup­ta as saying

At around 11 pm, the two managed to reach the road and a few passers-by got them admitted to a hospital, police said, adding that based on her complaint, a case of gangrape has been registered against unknown persons under Section 376(d) of IPC. While no arrests have been made so far, a special team has been formed to investigat­e the case, police said.

The woman and her friend are currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital in the city and both have suffered severe injuries, police said.

Reacting to the incident, Karnataka chief minister Basavaraj Bommai told reporters in Delhi that he has directed the Director General of Police, Praveen Sood, to initiate steps to nab the culprits.

“Based on the statement, a case has been registered. I have directed the DGP that whoever has perpetrate­d it, they should be identified and stringent action should be taken against them,” Bommai said.

Karnataka home minister Araga Jnanendra said he will visit Mysuru on Thursday to take stock of the investigat­ion. “Our officials have been sent to Mysuru from Bengaluru. I’m also going to Mysuru tomorrow (Thursday). This is a very unfortunat­e incident,” he said.
