GREATER NOIDA: The Uttar Pradesh government is set to build the first handicraft park in the state in Sector 29, near the Jewar airport site along the Yamuna Expressway, with an aim to boost the state’s development and create job opportunities. The Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (Yeida) has allotted plots on 50 acres in Sector 29 to 76 industrialists, who will set up businesses with a budget of ₹403 crore.

Factories set up at the park will provide permanent employment to at least 22,144 people, said officials.

“We have already allotted plots to the industrialists, who will set up their units there by November-end 2021. We are providing them with all the required support. This project will create

job opportunities, and also promote the state’s traditional handicraft and those engaged in it,” said Arun Vir Singh, chief executive officer (CEO), Yeida.

Yeida is developing basic facilities including roads, drainage, sewer lines, parks and water

supply lines in the area among others so that the construction works can begin by Novemberend. Most of the arterial roads have been developed, and the remaining work is in full swing so that the handicrafts park project is developed in time, the officials added.

The land was allotted to the industrialists following directions of the Uttar Pradesh chief minister, Yogi Adityanath, who aims to promote traditional handicraft workers, under the “one district one product (ODOP)” scheme. The Uttar Pradesh government introduced the scheme to encourage and revive aboriginals’ arts and craft products. It would help micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) to produce and promote products that are unique in the state.

According to the state government, this unique park will become home to workshops, factories, outlet making, and showcasing and selling wide-range handicrafts to domestic and global visitors.

“The Uttar Pradesh government aims to conserve traditional crafts and provide employment to thousands of artisans in the state. The project is aimed at boosting the contribution of the handicraft sector to the economy of the state. It aims to promote local artisans and their crafts so that they can reach international markets and earn better,” said a state government official, requesting anonymity. The Uttar Pradesh government on Wednesday also approved the detailed project report (DPR) proposal to go for a hybrid model of development for the Film City in Greater Noida, said officials aware of the developments.

Most of the cities in Uttar Pradesh are known for their traditional handicrafts, including sarees of Banaras, brass work of Moradabad, perfumes of Kannauj, chikankari of Lucknow, and terracotta of Gorakhpur.

“Each district has at least one product that is integral to its identity. Hundreds of craftsmen make unique and beautiful products from clay, wood and other materials, including toys and idols that have started drawing the attention of the people from other parts of the country as well. Once operational, the handicrafts park will not only benefit the artisans, but also the customers,” the official added.

“People living in Delhi and Noida will also be able to find handicrafts of Lucknow, Meerut, Bareilly, Firozabad, Agra, Varanasi, Chandauli, Gorakhpur, Allahabad, Pratapgarh, Azamgarh, Mirzapur and Jhansi and Lalitpur at this park,” he said.
