India at the Paralympic­s 1968

The year India made its Paralympic­s debut, at the Tel Aviv Games. We did not participat­e in the first two editions, in 1960 and 1964. India competed again in 1972, and then consistent­ly from the 1984 Games.

The total number of medals India has won at the Paralympic­s. These include 8 gold, 11 silver and 10 bronze.

The Tokyo 2020 Paralympic­s have netted India its largest-ever haul at these Games, by far. The previous best was at Rio 2016 and Stoke Mandeville/new York 1984. India won 4 medals in each.

Avani Lekhara

The percentage of our paraathlet­e contingent that is ranked in the global top 10 in their sport.

On Monday, the shooter became the first Indian woman to win a Paralympic gold for India. Later in the week, she also won a bronze. She has another event scheduled for September 5.

Sumit Antil

He won India’s second gold at Tokyo, in men’s javelin, also breaking the world record (multiple times).

Manish Narwal

He won India’s third gold at Tokyo, at the mixed 50m air pistol. Compatriot Singhraj took silver. He had earlier won bronze in men’s 10m pistol.

Pramod Bhagat

He has won India’s first-ever Paralympic gold in badminton. Manoj Sarkar took bronze.

Devendra Jhajharia

Two-time gold medallist with the javelin at previous Games. He won his third medal, silver, at Tokyo, making him India’s most decorated Paralympic athlete.
