The ODOP scheme has not only encouraged local craft and local craftsmen in a big way but has also helped the MSME sector grow a great deal

The ODOP products of Uttar Pradesh which have gained national and international market have proved to be an important tool in generating self-employment and adding to the economy of MSME sector in the state. It has come out as an effective way in generating self-employment due to all round support and promotion given by the Yogi government. Considering well that the traditional crafts have immense potential and the artisans needed hand holding through a slew of measures the scheme has created a special place at national level. The basic aim behind ‘One District One Product’ scheme has been to encourage local craft and craftsmen, one is to revive the local craft while improving the chances of livelihoods and secondly to provide employment to all those groups which are involved in those crafts.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in 2018 had announced the scheme of ‘One District One Product’ to encourage the local cluster-based craftwork. To improve on the industry, particularly the micro and the smaller industry, the best way is to create clusters and then work on those clusters, create infrastructure, both soft and hard, to improve productivity, quality, packaging and marketability, thus improving livelihoods and employment opportunities. The department is training about 20,000 craftsmen each year across the state, so that they can be taught the latest technologies and techniques of production. They are also being provided with a toolkit. The department has signed Mous and agreements with the national and international organisations for providing support to the people. An agreement has been signed with the Quality Council of India to handhold and help people associated to improve their quality. There is also another agreement with the Indian

Institute of Packaging to help them to improve their packaging. To ease the hardships of these artisans in selling their produce, the department has signed Mous with Amazon and Flipkart to help them to market their produce.

The department has created its own E-marketplace, ODOP e-mart, where these artisans are being on-boarded to sell their products through the e-commerce portal. A sufficient budget has been provided by the government for the scheme.

The emphasis of the government on the ODOP has helped the state to improve its export because most of the craft is being exported overseas and the export has risen by almost 30 per cent in the last three years. It was Rs 83,000 crore, last year it has jumped to Rs 1,21,00,000 crore. The emphasis on training, providing incentive and tying up with the technical advisory services has also helped to improve the exports.

The state government has planned to launch these ODOP products in the international market with participation in the Dubai Expo. There will be a big pavilion for ODOP to showcase traditional crafts, products. These efforts are being done not only to improve their visibility but also marketability in the foreign markets.

The One District One Product scheme in Uttar Pradesh will play a big role in realising the dream of self-reliant India. We saw possibilities in markets and are running many schemes to promote traditional business.

Yogi Adityanath, Chief Minister, Uttar Pradesh
