Channi and Shah discuss farm laws, UP violence
CHANDIGARH: Punjab chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi on Tuesday met Union home minister Amit Shah in Delhi at the latter’s residence in New Delhi and discussed scrapping of three farm laws and the violence in Lakhimpur Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh in which eight persons, including four farmers, allegedly run over by vehicles driven by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers.
Channi conveyed his deep anguish over the tragic incident and the manner in which Congress leaders going to meet the victims’ families were stopped or arrested. The chief minister said that [such] acts would not be tolerated, said a statement issued by the chief minister’s office. He also sought Shah’s intervention to resolve the farmers’ imbroglio, requesting him to repeal the farm laws that have led to protests, the statement added.
Farmers have been protesting at different sites since November 26 last year against the three
enacted farm laws. “These three farm laws should be repealed at the earliest and incidents like this (Lakhimpur Kheri) need to be stopped...,” Channi told media persons, before leaving for Delhi.
The new CM also drew the Shah’s attention towards the illegal trafficking of drugs and weapons from across the border into the State, urging him to seal the border, the statement read.
Channi also raised the demand for reopening of Kartarpur Sahib Corridor, urging the home minister to take an early decision in this regard. Shah assured the chief minister that they would soon take a decision to open the corridor after detailed deliberations, according to an official release.
