A woman, who jumped off a ledge at the Akshardham Metro station and was saved from a hard landing using a blanket by Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel on the ground, died during treatment in the hospital on Thursday evening.

A senior Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) officer said that CISF personnel on duty at platform number 2 of the Metro station noticed a woman had climbed the ledge of the Metro station at around 7.30am, following which CISF personnel swung into action.

In a video that went viral on social media, CISF personnel are seen trying to convince her to come down while a second team of CISF and civil employees separately arranged the blanket and positioned themselves on the ground, where the woman jumped.

In the video, the woman is seen jumping off the ledge and falling down three storeys onto the blanket held tightly by the personnel on the ground to prevent a hard landing.

“Despite persuasion, she jumped off but the people on the ground managed to catch her... Due to the severity of the fall, she sustained severe injuries... but there is still hope,” said a CISF official.

“She was immediately taken to a nearby hospital where she is under treatment and in family care,” a statement released by the central security force said.

“We informed local police regarding the incident and her family members were also informed. The motive of her taking the extreme step is unknown,” a CISF official said.

The woman was rushed to Lal Bahadur Shastri hospital where, CISF officials said, she succumbed to injuries around 9pm on Thursday.
