NOIDA: The Noida traffic police have begun a survey to determine which arterial stretches, such as the Noida-greater Noida Expressway and Surajpur Road, may soon be restricted to e-rickshaws.

Ghaziabad police will restrict the entry of e-rickshaws on national highway-9 beginning April 1 to decongest the stretch. Likewise, Noida may prohibit e-rickshaws from operating on specific high-speed corridors, said traffic police officers aware of the matter on Sunday.

"All traffic inspectors (TIS) are surveying their areas to see which points see heavy traffic, possibly due to e-rickshaw movement or unregulated parking. We will monitor how the ban on e-rickshaws on NH-9 affects traffic, particularly near the Model Town intersection, which is also a bottleneck for us," said Anil Yadav, deputy commissioner of police. (traffic).

The Ghaziabad police had approached the Noida police for assistance in restricting the entry of e-rickshaws at three significant points: Chhijarsi, Sector 62 (Model Town), and the NIB intersection. According to DCP Yadav, the traffic police have already deployed officers at these locations.

Within Noida, areas such as Surajpur crossing, Pari Chowk, and an elevated road have mixed traffic and may not allow e-rickshaws, said officers. However, e-rickshaws will continue to ply even on major roads within sectors. "The same is true for the Noida-greater Noida Expressway. But there aren't many e-rickshaws on this stretch. While the areas around Atta, Botanical Garden, and Sector 18 have many e-rickshaws that spill onto the main road, it is difficult to prohibit them because they are essential for many commuters as a last-mile option," Yadav said.

Haphazard parking of e-rickshaws along the sides of roads, and the mixing of high and lowspeed traffic, causes congestion in many areas of Noida and Greater Noida – auto and e-rickshaw parking has been a planning flaw in Noida, as there are only six designated auto parking lots throughout the city.
