Be it Shah Rukh Khan’s comment on intolerance or Naseeruddin Shah’s “mediocre actor” remark on late actor Rajesh Khanna, celebrities’ statements have a big impact. They are largely discussed and debated upon. Due to her upfront attitude, Sandhya Mridul, too, feels she has been scrutinised. “However, I have become more sensitive now. I am compassionate about the things I say. I am not honest for the sake of being blunt,” she says.

Sandhya is currently acting in a political-thriller TV show. At a time when supernatural shows dominate the small screen, ask her if she feels content-driven serials will fade away and she says, “I don’t believe that anything will go away. The balance can be restored. There are takers for content-driven shows. I, as an audience, would like to watch such shows. When my mum comes to town, I can’t spend time with her because of the kind of shows that she watches,” she says.

The actor adds that Indian television has always aped the West, and she is “glad” about the same. “It’s good for us. TV is big in the West. Well-known directors are involved and shows are being backed by some of the biggest producers. I hope a lot of good directors and producers come forward and do stuff [on TV]. Mahesh Bhatt is also doing a show on the small screen. It will be great to see Imtiaz Ali and Anurag Basu working on TV shows, as they have in the past,” says Sandhya.
