HOLLYWOOD HIGHEST GROSSING HINDI MOVIES OF 2016

-

Here is the list of eight films that crossed the ` 100 crore mark in 2016. The success of a movie is weighed in terms of its nett box-office collections. A film’s initial box-office run determines the length of its life in the theatres, more than the novelty of the subject or the innovative approach of the director.

This year, while some films made money, some of those that flopped include a few that released after the government demonetised ` 500 and ` 1,000 bank notes in November, triggering a cash crunch. Still, eight films crossed the ` 100 crore mark in 2016. A lot has been said and written about Salman Khan’s charisma at the box office, and he just keeps upping his game with every film. In a year when not many Hindi films made even ` 200 crore, Sultan earned more than ` 300 crore. Sushant Singh Rajput delivered the performance of his lifetime in the biopic of India’s cricket captain, Mahendra Singh Dhoni. The film received mixed reviews but scored well at the box office. At ` 132.85 crore, MS Dhoni is one of the highest grossers of 2016. Rustom (`127.42 crore) and Housefull 3 (`107.70 crore) are amongst the biggest hits of 2016. Apart from Abhishek Chaubey’s Udta Punjab, Karan Johar’s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (ADHM) turned out to be one of the most controversial films of the year. First, it had Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s sensuous scenes with Ranbir Kapoor. Then, with Raj Thackeray’s objection to Pakistani actor Fawad Khan’s presence in the movie, ADHM Ajay Devgn’s Shivaay gave ADHM a good run for its money as both the films released on the same day, October 27. Devgn proved trade pundits wrong by making a strong impact at the box office. Shivaay made ` 100.25 crore. Dangal is still running to packed houses and has made over ` 197 crore in the first week of its release itself. It may turn out to be Bollywood’s most successful film ever.
