‘Actors are nothing without material’

Besides making a name for himself in television soaps, Ram Kapoor is also known for his roles in movies such as Udaan (2010) and Mere Dad Ki Maruti (2013). Ask him about the difference between working in movies and TV shows, and he says, “I have always believed that an actor has to act. I have never differentiated between the mediums. The only difference is probably the amount of time. When you are doing films, you have the luxury of time. In television, you are battling against deadlines; its more urgent.”

The actor has managed to garner success on both the big and small screen, but when asked which he finds more gratifying, he says, “It’s not the medium, but the project and the character I am playing that I find interesting. I found some movies really gratifying such as Udaan and Student of the Year (2012) — the script and the characters were amazing. I enjoyed working on Humshakals (2014) as well. Although some people found it outrageous, it was something different and fun for me. At the same time, TV shows such as Bade Achhe Lagte Hain and Kasamh Se were gratifying.”

As an artiste, Ram says he gives preference to the project and its content than the scale of a film. “It’s not very important. I believe that an actor is nothing without material. Bad material can make a brilliant actor look average, and very good material can make an average actor look much better than he is. I always concentrate on the material. Secondly, I look at the kind of people that I am working with. If these two things fall into place, I don’t think anything can stop me from doing a film,” says the actor.
