Making of the awards and statements
America’s Presidentelect Donald Trump dominated the mood at the 74th Golden Globe Awards, which was held in Los Angeles, USA, on Sunday Night. Host Jimmy Fallon started the night’s proceedings by taking a crack at Trump when he compared him to the evil ruler King Joffrey (Jack Gleeson) from the American TV series Game of Thrones. “What would it be like if King Joffrey had lived? Well, in 12 days we’re going to find out,” he said. It wasn’t just Fallon. Actor Meryl Streep, who won the Cecil B DeMille Award, slammed Trump for his policies on immigration and controversial comments. “Hollywood is crawling with outsiders and foreigners, and if you kick them all out, you’ll have nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts, which are not the arts,” she said in her speech that lasted a little over four minutes.
Streep said the “performance” that stood out this year did not belong to an actor, but to Trump when he publicly mocked a disabled reporter. “Disrespect invites disrespect, violence incites violence. When the powerful use their position to bully others we all lose,” she further said.
Actor Hugh Laurie, too, joked that it might be his last Golden Globes win. “Thank you first of all to the Hollywood Foreign Press association for this amazing honour…,” he said, adding, “I don’t mean to be gloomy, it’s just that it has the words ‘Hollywood,’ ‘Foreign’ and ‘Press’ in the title. I just don’t know,” he said.
Trump, however, wasn’t the only highlight of the event. Ryan GoslingEmma Stone starrer La La Land (2016) made a record by collecting seven prizes. No film had won more than four Golden Globes since 1979, when the crime-drama Midnight Express (1978) received six awards.
The celebratory night also saw moving tributes to the mother-motherdaughter duo Carrie Fisherher and Debbie Reynolds, whoho died just a day apart in December, last year.
