With the blistering heatwave taking over the city, it is time we switch our daily care routine to ensure that our skin and hair can withstand the damages caused by the weather. Various city experts suggest tips for different kinds of hair and skin to keep up with the soaring temperatures.

Here, Dr Vandana Punjabi, consultant cosmetologist trichologist, Nanavati Super Specialty Hospital, suggests the following steps for haircare:

STRAIGHT HAIR

Humidity and moisture are the biggest problems when it comes to straight hair. Try to avoid moisture (visiting steam rooms) and water (swimming pools) as long as possible.

During the summer, humidity, moisture as well as the natural oil of the skin are a threat to your hair. Apply dry shampoo to the roots of the hair and brush it outward to remove oil and impurities.

Straight hair tends to get little fizzy by the end of the day due to the day’s heat and humidity. Apply little oil and wrap your hair for the night. A secure wrap is the quickest and the easiest way to get rid of fizz.

IRONED HAIR

Make sure that you dry your hair well before starting. Some tools can work on wet hair too. But if you don’t have those specific tools, it’s compulsory to dry your hair well first. It’s better to go section by section for better results.

There are number of professional irons available in the market and professional tools are always advisable, as they transfer the heat uniformly to the hair without damaging it and the effects are long-lasting.

There are many haircare products available in the market that can be used both-- pre- and post-straightening. They protect your hair from heat damage and other harmful effects. Buy these products wisely according to your hair texture and type.

WAVY AND CURLYHAIR

Wavy and curly hair becomes more fizzy in the summer due to the moisture and humidity. It’s a task to maintain that perfect wavy hairstyle intact.

Hot and sticky summer days cause you to wash your hair often, which can lather away the nutrients that keep it manageable. Instead of washing your hair, just wet your hair without shampoo and apply a conditioner, rinse out and then follow with a leave-in conditioner.

Use a moisturising shampoo that is specially formulated for curly hair and you’ll whisk away the summer’s stubborn build-up and styling residue while defending your locks against dam- age and frizz.

Also, curly and wavy hair tends to have more protein and less moisture than straight hair so it seeks to balance itself by absorbing any available moisture. If the hair is parched, it absorbs the moisture from the humid air, leading hair shafts to become puffy and frizzy. Opt for a weekly deep-conditioning mask that helps hair stay well-hydrated and create a humidity barrier.

Try to dry your hair naturally than use a dryer or external heat. Avoid hot styling tools as your hair is already fighting the heat of the summer. Instead, use conditioner on wet hair and let the hair dry naturally.

While the extreme sun makes the skin dehydrated, the humidity ends up making it extremely sticky. Christina Ahiwale, beauty expert and trainer, Jean-Claude Biguine Salon and Spa, India, gives tips to maintain your skin’s health this season:

The priority is to keep yourself hydrated. Drink plenty and enough of water

Use a moisturiser followed by a sunblock, which is suitable for your skin type before stepping out of the house

Regular clean ups and facials are recommended

For people who use make up on a daily basis, use a makeup remover to remove the makeup before going to bed

For people undergoing any type of dermatologist treatment, sunblock should be used at any and all given point of time

Follow a proper diet and use a face wash twice a day to wash off the sweat and impurities.
