STYL E SPY

From British royalty to Hollywood starlets, yellow shines bright in womenswear. Colour guru Pantone even named Primrose Yellow as one of its top shades for spring 2017. Here’s the low-down on this season’s happiest shade.

Yellow became popular among the fashionable elite in England at the beginning of the 16th century. It didn’t take long for the trend to spread, with ladies across the nation dyeing wool in all shades of yellow from sunflower to saffron. Fast forward a few centuries and this cheerful hue is still going strong. Queen Elizabeth celebrated her 90th birthday in 2016 in a lemon yellow jacket, dress and hat.

Red carpet royalty have been embracing the colour as well. Actress Emma Stone wore a flirty yellow number in hit film La La Land, while Emma Watson as Belle had us all sighing nostalgically in 2017’s live action Beauty and the Beast. A faithful reproduction of the dress from the Disney original, her iconic yellow gown flared out dramatically from the waist to create a skirt worthy of the most romantic ballroom dancing.

Celebrities are wearing mellow yellow off the set too, from Natalie Portman’s vivid Prada gown to Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone’s radiant yellow Ralph Lauren dress, both at the 2017 Golden Globes. Meanwhile, who can forget Rihanna sashaying up the stairs in her fur-trimmed Guo Pei cape at the 2015 Met Gala?

The spring/ summer 2017 catwalks also explored 50 shades of yellow. Calf-length dresses were balanced with floaty jumpsuits in neon acids and hypnotic patterns at Emilio Pucci. Chloé took a low-key approach with relaxed dresses and separates in honey tones and muted mustards. Sheer ruffles and florals added a romantic yet playful touch. Prada’s collection featured chinoiserie pajamas and chiffon dresses in soft lemony fabrics with feather trims and sparkling finishes.

This sun-drenched shade is the perfect pick-meup on cloudy days or a fitting companion on your next tropical escape. Go head-to-toe like the Queen or simply pop on some yellow-tinted sunnies to add a ray of light to your look.
