Aamir set to clash with Rajni on Diwali

Khan calls Rajinikanth to discuss why he changed his film’s release date

Aamir Khan (left) already has a date with the festival of lights in 2018, thanks to the release of Thugs of Hindostan. And now, the actor has also set his sights on this year’s Diwali — Aamir has moved the release date of his next film, Secret Superstar, to the Diwali weekend from August 4.

However, this will cause Aamir’s film to clash with

Rajinikanth (right) and Akshay Kumar-starrer, 2.0. And although there have been no official announcements yet, Ajay Devgn-starrer Golmaal Again might also release on the same weekend.

It’s believed that Aamir took the call to move the release date, because August 11 will see the release of two big films — Akshay’s Toilet: Ek Prem Katha and Shah Rukh Khan’s next, which has been directed by Imtiaz Ali.

“For Aamir’s film, showcasing the film in the second week is as important as the first week. But with two big releases on August 11, a majority of screens and theatres would have been taken by them, not leaving much space for Secret Superstar. That’s why he decided to move the release date,” says a source.

Apparently, since Aamir shares a close bond with Rajinikanth, the former personally called him up and discussed his concerns vis-àvis his original August 4 release date, and with Rajni’s “blessing”, Aamir’s film has been announced as a Diwali release. “Traditionally, we have seen that the Diwali weekend can accommodate two or more releases,” adds the source.

When contacted, writerdirector Advait Chandan says, “I’m really happy about the change. We’ve made a film that families would love to watch together, and Diwali is the perfect time for that.”
