Will Aamir’s nose-stud look be adopted by men in the street?
OMG!” was the most common reaction when Sushant Singh Rajput shared an Instagram photo with Aamir Khan, who was wearing a nose stud. There were some “why” and “WTF!” reactions as well. It’s rumoured that the look is for Aamir’s new film Thugs of Hindostan.
A man with a nose stud sure makes an impact. In the past, actors Ranveer Singh and Ayushmann Khurrana have aced the look for magazines and stage performances. The look went international, too, as singer Zayn Malik first sported a nose stud in 2015.
A nose stud or ring crosses gender lines, states stylist Vikram Seth. “Do it, if you can slay it with attitude,” he says. “We live in a democratic country. You be whatever you want to be. Whether you are gay, straight or anything [else], it’s all about carrying the trend, a cool look with swag.”
Stylist Gautam Kalra says, “For an actor, a nose ring could go a long way in defining a character. In the real world, if you have the personality to pull it off, why not? I myself pierced my nose 15 years ago.”
Designer Amit Talwar got the bridge of his nose pierced two years ago. “Wow”, “This is awesome” are the compliments he got. “It looked so sexy that I forgot the pain,” he says.
Designer Rina Dhaka points out that Indian tribal men have long worn nose studs. “And don’t forget the bull, he wears a nose ring,” she says.
THE NOSE STUD, NOW WORN BY URBAN MEN WITH SWAG, HAS LONG BEEN A PART OF THE INDIAN TRIBAL TRADITION.
