When Parineeti Chopra helped make a mixtape

- Prashant Singh

Ayushmann Khurrana and Parineeti Chopra’s next film, Meri Pyaari Bindu, has one element that’s almost as important as the lead pair themselves: a mixtape. Reminiscent of the ’90s, the mixtape comes in the form of a cassette with twelve songs, each of which triggers a special memory for both Ayushmann and Parineeti’s characters. The songs are classic Bollywood retro fare, featuring Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhosle, Lata Mangeshkar, and RD Burman, among other greats.

However, a source says that putting together this playlist was not a simple task. “In fact, Parineeti played a big role in choosing and selecting her favourite songs for the mixtape. Since the tape is an integral part of the film’s script, director Akshay Roy and writer Suprotim Sengupta also argued before locking down the list of songs (for the mixtape). Producer Maneesh Sharma had to play referee,” says the source.

A big fan of retro music, the Shuddh Desi Romance actor (2013) also asked for her favourites to be included in the mixtape, and she even got Ayushmann involved in the process. “Parineeti’s two favourites from the mixtape are ‘Aaiye meherbaan’ (Howrah Bridge; 1958) and ‘Abhi na jaao chor kar’ (Hum Dono; 1961),” says the source.

When contacted, Parineeti said, “It was the demand of the script. There are situations in the film that require certain songs. ‘Aaiye meherbaan’ felt like a great song [to have] when I am singing in a club [in the film], and ‘Abhi na jao chor kar’ has a lifelong, endearing, heart-breaking yet romantic feeling to it, which matched the situation in our film, so we chose that.”
