‘Content on TV is all about trends’
The viewer is looking for new content, ideas and stories, and something they haven’t seen.
HUSSAIN KUWAJERWALA, ACTOR
From working in shows such as Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi (KSBKBT) and Kumkum, to hosting reality shows such as Indian Idol and Aaj ki Raat Hai Zindagi, Hussain Kuwajerwala has had a long innings as an actor and TV show host. Speaking about the current content on the small screen, he says, “TV content is all about trends. They last for a while. For example, KSBKBT and others started the trend of daily soaps, but before that we had Shanti. Yet, the industry took notice of the trend only later [with KSBKBT].”
He says that the launch of reality shows such as Indian Idol and Kaun Banega Crorepati, among others, was followed by costume dramas, rural-theme-based shows like Balika Vadhu, and historical and supernatural-themed shows that are on air right now. He adds, “The viewer, too, is looking for new content, ideas and stories, and something they haven’t seen on TV. When something works, other producers try to cash in. As an actor, you can be part of any show as long as it’s exciting for you. In fact, in shows that are not daily soaps, one gets the chance to try action, romance, and play characters that are larger than life.”
Hussain started off as an actor, but soon moved on to hosting shows. Several others have also followed in his footsteps and have begun hosting. Hussain says that he prefers “acting to hosting”. “However, one explores a lot of his or her personality as a host too. It is fun and teaches you your limits as a person. If you have the opportunity, why wouldn’t you? Moreover, one is committed for a limited amount of time as a host, which is beneficial for actors,” he says.
