‘Movies are a mirror of society’

- Pooja Sharma RAVEENA TANDON, ACTOR pooja.sharma@hindustantimes.com

Raveena Tandon has been an active supporter of social causes, charities and NGOs over the years. The actor says she has been involved with the UNICEF for the girl child, PETA, the Spina Bifida Association — which works to raise awareness about the health disorder — as well as the White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood. Recently, the actor supported Street Smart, Street Safe, a campaign to improve road safety in Mumbai. She has also been part of the Tobacco-free Mumbai Police campaign, which aims to lower tobacco consumption amongst policemen in the city. “I am doing fundraising events for an NGO called IDA (In Defence of Animals), and I have been their ambassador for three years. They have been doing great work for stray dogs through sterilisation, treatment and rehabilitation,” the actor says.

When asked if celebrities need to be more vocal about issues and causes, the actor says, “One cannot help but be influenced by the generosity of their peers. Charities also rely on celebrities to get press and raise awareness. I feel that our regular efforts with charities will contribute to the growth of our society.”

Over the years, the actor has also worked in movies that had subjects focused on societal issues. Ask her if cinema is a reflection of society, and she says, “It depends on the type of movie and type of society. Movies are a mirror of society like any other art. A positive movie can have a negative impact and vice versa.”

I feel that our regular efforts with charities will contribute to the growth of our society.
