Parineeti accused of lying, says she was misunderstood

At a recent event in Mumbai, actor Parineeti Chopra (left) opened up about how her family faced a financial crunch when she was in school. “I am from a small city, Ambala (Haryana). We didn’t have any money, so I used to commute to school by bicycle. We did not have a car, or even money for the bus,” she said. Soon, the video of Parineeti opening up went viral.

The revelation, however, didn’t go down well with the actor’s classmates from her school, Convent of Jesus and Mary, Ambala. They took to social media, calling her a “liar” looking for “publicity”. They revealed that Parineeti had two cars at home.

Kkanoo Gupta posted on Facebook, “Shame... coming from a privileged background and lying through the teeth in front of camera... Coming from the same school I probably also remember the car her father used to have. And going to school on a cycle was a trend those days, and also a privilege not every one had (sic).”

Other batchmates joined in. “All CJMites can vouch for the lies about her financial status....There could have been eve-teasing on roads but why the sob story of poverty?” wrote Deepali Malhotra Bhatti.

Clarifying her stance, Parineeti posted an official statement: “I know I said this, but it’s been misconstrued, about something irrelevant about me having a car or not! ... The essence of why I was giving an example was lost.”
