Four years ago, when Varun Sharma made his film debut with Fukrey (2013), little did he know that his character, Choocha would go on to become a big hit. But now, with Varun getting rave reviews for his outing as Choocha in the sequel of Fukrey, the actor is “feeling absolutely great.”

“Fukrey is the film I started my career with, so it’ll always be very special for me. Also, it’s fantastic that I get to play the same character again. When I was shooting for the sequel of Fukrey, all the visuals of how I went about my journey came back into my mind. Not many people get to play the same character again that they start their careers with, but I am the lucky one,” he says.

The Dilwale (2015) actor feels it’s “heartening” to see people remember him by his character’s name. “For any actor, it’s the biggest achievement if you are addressed by your character’s name. For instance, I still remember Shah Rukh sir as Rahul and Mr Bachchan as Vijay. So, I feel glad and blessed. It only shows the acceptance that the film and my part have had,” he says.

But was it difficult to go back to such a loved character? “Not really, but on a psychological level, it was a bit challenging. When you play a character for the first time, you explore a lot of things and develop a body language and other nuances. But when you are revisiting a role, the characteristics remain the same. And there’s a very thin line between going overboard and underplaying things. So, you have to maintain that balance,” he says.

Varun admits that during the shooting of the first part, the actors were still “finding our feet”. “But this time around, there was more madness and lots of nostalgia too. So, in that sense, things didn’t really change,” says Varun, adding that his family is also “very excited” about him going back to playing Choocha. “My mother is very emotional and happy. Anyway, Punjabis show their emotions openly (laughs),” he says.
