Bringing back memories of the fantastic ’90s through this show

-

Ask any ’90s kid what growing up in that era was, and they’ll tell you that it was the best time of their lives. Besides being a transition decade, which saw the advent of the Internet and satellite television in India, it was also a defining era because the ’90s have influenced pop culture in the country like no other decade has.

This was the time when the angry young man of Bollywood gave way to the chocolate boy image on screen — defined by Aamir, Shah Rukh, and Salman Khan, all of whom continue to rule Bollywood to this day. At a time when there weren’t many real-life heroes around, a shy, 16-year-old boy, Sachin Tendulkar, became the sporting hope of our nation. AR Rahman revolutionised music, and his music tops the charts even today. Those high-waist jeans, crop tops and hoop earrings, which were so popular back then, have again found their way into the wardrobes of today’s youth. It was a truly special time, the ’90s.

While we can’t go back to that glorious time, Sony Entertainment Television, through its new show, Yeh Un Dinon Ki Baat Hai, brings the ’90s back to Indians. The show, set in that era, is a teenage love story that takes you to a time when friend requests were made with slam books, and not on Facebook. Hushed voices accompanied messages written on chits, and missed calls on landlines — that was the secret language.

Premiering tonight at 10.30pm on Sony Entertainment Television, Yeh Un Dinon Ki Baat Hai, is the story of Naina (Ashi Singh) and Sameer (Randeep Rai), two teens who experience love for the first time. The story promises to fill hearts with memories aplenty. Here’s to those good old days!
