‘There is much more competition now’

- Pooja Sharma

Akshaye Khanna will next be seen in the modern adaptation of the murder mystery, Ittefaq along with Sidharth Malhotra and Sonakshi Sinha. Talking about the project he says, “It’s a fabulous script, which I really enjoyed (shooting). It’s a murder mystery. It’s a popular genre all over the world, but in Hindi cinema it’s a genre rarely explored. So, to come across a good murder mystery script, it has happened in years maybe. We should make more of them.”

The actor has dabbled into commercial entertainers as well as offbeat subjects in his career. After attempting unconventional roles, ask him about the genres he would like to be part of, and he says, “I’ve never had a preference of one genre over the others. For me just being on screen, or a film set, is what makes me wake up in the morning. Now whether it’s a comedy, love story or action — it doesn’t matter. I have no preference. I’m glad that I’ve been part of varied films. Writers and film-makers have never stereotyped me, or slotted me. They have given

me the opportunity to work in a variety of genres. So the credit should really go them. I am just a tool in the hands of a director.”

Earlier in an interview, Akshaye had mentioned that the current generation of actors are far more prepared than the previous generations. So are they fortunate in terms of opportunities as compared to the previous generations? “You look at the generation of actors that have come after I started working. You read their interviews, watch them, and quite early in their careers, they have their PR skills in place. Also, there is so much more competition and world is moving faster, there is not much time. They are much smarter and well prepared than we ever were,” says the Race (2008) actor.

Ask Akshaye if he will ever join the social media bandwagon, and he says, “You know I might. I am thinking about it. But I think I should because that is the world we are living in. It’s a great platform to communicate with people — just interact generally — if you want to say something or congratulate someone. Though I don’t have a lot to say, but whenever I do, I can always tweet about it.”
