KUNAL KEMMU ROOTS FOR KIDS

The actor feels children, as a target audience, are being neglected, and that more movies need to be made for them.

Kunal Kemmu says hearing the script for his upcoming project, Golmaal Again, was merely a formality. He says, “No one can tell if a film will be a blockbuster or a hit, because if we knew that nobody would make a disaster. But in this case, we all trust the writers, Rohit (Shetty; film-maker), and his team. Just the experience of working in the Golmaal series is enough to be part of Golmaal Again. Obviously, we were in splits when we heard the script.”

Kemmu started out as a child actor in films such as Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke (1993) and Zakhm (1998). However, he agrees that children are somewhat neglected as a target audience in India. “I agree that there aren’t many movies made for children. We do have channels for kids on television. I think people don’t look at kids as a big market, because they are dependent on their parents and they can’t go to watch movies on their own.”

He says that may be one reason why film-makers have to make movies for the entire family. “Sometimes, to make a film like that, you have to make movies in the fantasy genre. Fantasies are usually big-budget movies and a big risk. But we will get there. The last good children’s film I saw was Chillar Party (2011). As a kid, I remember watching a film called Anjali (1990). We haven’t had many films for children. Golmaal Again is quite kid-friendly,” he says.

On the personal front, the Go Goa Gone (2013) actor recently had a daughter, Inaaya Naumi, with Soha Ali Khan. Talking about fatherhood, Kunal says, “I’ve realised that every other relationship that you have in life takes time for you to fall in love. This is the only relationship where you get attached instantly, because the moment you hear the baby cry and hold her in your arms for the first time, you’re willing to give up your life for her. It’s the most special relationship.”

I think people don’t look at kids as a big market, because they are dependent on their parents and they can’t go to watch movies on their own. KUNAL KEMMU, ACTOR
