RAVI IS FULL OF GRATITUDE

“I am very thankful to the TV industry, as whatever I am [today] is because of TV,” says actor Ravi Dubey.

Ravi Dubey is thrilled that his hit TV show, Jamai Raja, is still doing well in India and abroad. The show was on air for over two-and-ahalf years, ran for 701 episodes, and is currently aired in many countries including Germany, South Africa, Mauritius, Indonesia and in the Middle East.

Speaking about the success of the show, Ravi says, “Our industry works on fixed notions. So, if producers realise that women-centric shows work or a saas-bahu concept works, then there will be hordes of such shows. You can only do something good and different if you have a good story on your side. The gender of the protagonist doesn’t decide the fate of the show. People loved Jamai Raja when it aired, and it’s surprising that it is the top show in the Indian rural market even today. That is a much bigger market then the urban one, which means people in villages appreciate a good story.” Jamai Raja featured Ravi in the lead role of a son-in-law, with Nia Sharma co-starring as his wife, and Achint Kaur playing his mother-in-law.

Ravi says he believes that if “you take a space and fill it with appreciation, it will always bear fruit”. “I think that show is one such space for me, as besides the hard work I put in, I am very protective about it. The love all the actors put into the show was reflected in the love we got from the audiences,” he says.

With the success of his male-centric show at a time when women-centric serials are the rage, the actor feels there is space to break an existing perception or idea. “I respect people who want to change, but I am not saying that more male-centric shows should be made, as the channel heads know what works for them. The industry has the money to make a good product, so why not make a good product for the audience? I want the industry to grow further. I am very thankful to the TV industry, as whatever I am is because of TV.”
