VARUN DHAWAN’S ‘DIRECT’ CONNECT

- Prashant Singh

The actor says though Arjun Kapoor — whom he had directed in a short film — may not like to be directed by him again, he would love to go behind the camera

Not many know that before making his big Bollywood debut (with Student of The Year; 2012), Varun Dhawan tried his hands at direction. In 2010, as an acting school student, he helmed a short film, White Mountain, which starred him as well as his old friend and contemporary, Arjun Kapoor.

Ask Varun if he would like to direct Arjun again, and he says: “I don’t think Arjun wants me to direct him (laughs). But I am sure we might do a film together someday. It will be a lot of fun to work with him. We have a very unique chemistry off screen, which can come across nicely on screen as well.”

Not necessarily with Arjun but Varun admits that “someday, he would like to go behind the camera”. “I don’t know [about it] right now. I’ve no idea what I would make. Today, there are so many opportunities to do things in the digital sphere. So, maybe someday, I will take up something. Let’s see,” he says.

But Varun getting into direction wouldn’t come as a big surprise considering his father, David Dhawan as well as brother, Rohit are directors. On this, the Dilwale (2015) actor says, “It’ll be a surprise when people will get to know what I am making. To be honest, I am fascinated with all the aspects of filmmaking. Be it production, marketing or other things, I really enjoy all of them. We work with superb professionals and it’s always great to learn something or the other from them.”

Varun adds that if he feels like doing something [apart from acting] in the later stages of his career, he will surely try his hands at it. “Maybe, I would like to do a music video first. Right now, I don’t know [for sure],” he says.

So, is something already in the pipeline? “No, right now, there’s nothing at all. I have lots of [acting] work to do. I have no time for anything else. I’m only doing what any other actor does — acting,” he says.
