‘I’m not affected by fame’
Rajkummar Rao has been waltzing in and out of film sets, with as many as five film releases this year and a web series. Only a leg injury could slow down the actor. He talks about fame, his comfort zone and more.
Most of your roles have been appreciated. Do you now feel the pressure to live up to expectations?
I don’t think about people’s expectations. I just think about the work I am doing at that point. I can’t work under pressure or because someone expects me to live up to a certain benchmark.
I am very happy with my own journey and I feel fortunate to be a part of some wonderful films, which I am proud of. I feel blessed that a small-town boy like me saw this dream and that’s actually come true. I am an actor in the Hindi film industry now so there is a lot of gratitude.
Does comedy come easily to you?
Nothing is easy. Bareilly Ki Barfi and Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana look easy because they come across as light-hearted, but as an actor, my hard work and sincerity in those films are the same as that I put in Newton. I am not taking anything lightly and I am putting as much effort to make my characters look believable and human.
So, what’s your comfort zone?
I try to not get typecast. It gets very boring because once you find your comfort zone, it’s easy for you to just keep doing that. I haven’t found my comfort zone because honestly I am still exploring. And I don’t want to know either. I just want to be this student of cinema. Fame and success don’t affect me. I anyway don’t get attached to too many things so I guess that’s just how my system is built.
