As an actor, I am still learning on the job: Kriti

- Monika Rawal Kukreja n monika.rawal@htlive.com

Despite being an outsider in Bollywood, actor Kriti Sanon didn’t really give in to the set norms of the industry. She did just four films in four years, and is arguably one of the most successful actors of the current crop.

However, in all the films that Kriti has been a part of — Heropanti (2014), Dilwale (2015), Raabta and Bareilly Ki Barfi — she has mostly done girl-next-door roles, and is yet to try something intense. Asked if she’s been trying to break away from this image and experiment with more challenging roles, Kriti says, “I would never want to restrict myself in one genre. As an actor, I am still learning on the job. I have never done theatre or acted before; I am trying to prove myself and better myself with every film [that I do]. At least, that’s my motive.”

The 27-year-old says a lot of what an actor does on-screen also depends on the script that is offered. “You can’t ignore anything that comes your way, and out of that, what you really like, that decides your choice of roles and films,” she says, adding, “There might be something really interesting about a character, which you’d love to play. So, I just go with it without thinking, ‘I have already done a happy character, so I can’t do that again.’ I don’t think you can bracket in such a way.” It’s the script, insists Kriti, that is most important. “So if one day, there’s a film that is attached to a social cause, I would love to do it, provided the script excites me. At the same time, if there’s a thriller that comes my way with a great plot, I would take that too.”

Is there any genre that she won’t want to ever try? “Horror! I don’t like watching it and I’ll definitely not watch my own film. I would not be able to work in it either.”
