Athiya roots for a clean environment
Considering the increasing levels of water pollution and the death of aquatic animals all around the world, Athiya Shetty, who runs an NGO with her mother has decided to donate funds for cleaner and greener beaches in Mumbai. She wants to start with spreading awareness about how lakhs of animals die in the ocean due to industrial waste.
A source close to the actor reveals, “Athiya, who feels strongly about animal welfare, is of the opinion that aquatic animals can be saved if our beaches are cleaned of plastic and other debris that floats into the ocean, killing thousands of animals. She and her mother, Mana are very involved with rehoming and rehabilitating stray animals and this is a new initiative that they’re taking up.”
Talking about this initiative, Athiya says, “We have been taught all through school and college that our planet is running out of resources. But, if you take a good look at history, mankind has always got what it needed and almost always at the cost of animals and plants. Our concern should not be worrying about resources because we’ll find a way to fulfil our needs with the technology we have. Our concern should be to focus on ecological degradation. Diversity is dying. Aquatic animals have been suffering and it’s all our doing. The pollution had already made an irreversible impact a long time ago. It’s time that as inhabitants of this planet we clean up our act and let the animal kingdom coexist with us.”
