I LOVE THE BEAUTY OF WORDS: TWINKLE

- Prashant Singh

Khanna, who is working on her third book, says “every moment that she spent” producing Pad Man or the time that she puts in her writing “does not feel like work”

She had a six-year-long acting career during which Twinkle Khanna acted in over a dozen Hindi films. But she readily admits to having “failed spectacularly as an actor”. But interestingly, her authors’ journey has kicked off on a “spectacular” note — within a couple of years, she came out with two books, Mrs Funnybones and The Legend Of Lakshmi Prasad.

“It’s important in today’s world to be able to step back from yourself; and especially the social media wherein you are at the forefront all the time. I think I love the beauty and simple placements of words. It’s (writing) something where you easily vanish and I find that really interesting,” says Twinkle, adding that unlike many authors, she doesn’t necessarily need solitude to write.

“I have my [writing] desk bang in the middle of my living room as I need to keep an eye on my kids (Aarav and Nitara) as well. Also, I don’t really like being locked up in a place, so I can write anywhere but I primarily write on my desk and I write early in the morning,” she says.

Ask Twinkle how writing affects her as a person and she says, “Even when I write my column – which is about me but also has 60% fiction – I am able to completely disappear within myself. Then, I don’t exist as ‘me’ because it’s as if you are stringing words and thinking thoughts, which have nothing to do with you. In fact, I feel the same even when I do my yoga breathing,” explains Twinkle, who is already working on her third book.

Interestingly, the author readily admits that for her, there’s “no comparison” between acting and writing. “You know, sometimes, when I come back from a vacation, I end up writing till late in the night, which I hate because I am a morning person. But I never complain. However, I never felt the same vis-àvis acting. I used to grudge every hour that I spent on the sets. But every moment that I spent producing Pad Man (her debut film as a producer) or time that I put in my writing doesn’t feel like work. That’s the greatest joy I have [visà-vis writing],” says Twinkle.
