Rajit Kapur to play Jawaharlal Nehru
Actor Rajit Kapur is known for his penchant for offbeat characters and his ability to essay his roles with aplomb. Now, we have learnt that Rajit will portray the late freedom fighter and independent India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, in the historical thriller, Gandhi Hatya: Ek Saazish. The film is based on the events that led to the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi, and takes a look at the events after independence that shaped India as a secular democracy.
Rajit says, “It was a great experience and a huge honour to portray the role of Nehruji. He was a historic, legendary politician, and had been an instrumental force in India’s freedom.”
Talking about the plot of the film, a source close to the film’s unit says, “It was a tumultuous time for India immediately after independence and the country’s partition, and it left over two million dead and over 14 million Indians displaced. Jawaharlal Nehru is in a bind; he is faced with a refugee and an escalating communal problem that’s threatening to lead to a civil war and further break up the country into principalities. Further, strong opposition within and without the party is challenging his position, making his job even tougher.”
A source close to the actor reveals, “Rajit’s look as Nehru is one of the major USPs of the movie. Once Rajit slips into Nehru’s traditional prince coat, his signature red rose, and the trademark Congress Party white cap, the resemblance is uncanny.”
