Actor Barun Sobti is happy that his last release, Tu Hai Mera Sunday (2017; THMS), received rave reviews when it released in theatres and later when it was available on an international video-ondemand platform. He says, “It was heartening to see the response the film received. I was struggling with myself about the decisions I have made in my career. I chose to do something that I felt I should and not what other actors were doing.”

The actor rose to fame with his successful TV show, Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon, in 2012, but he quit the show after a year, and it shut down soon after. Barun then went on to do films that disappointed at the box office, starred in a web series, and two of his films, Satra Ko Shaadi Hai and 22 Yards, are awaiting release. The actor feels the success of THMS has helped him a lot. He says, “When you follow your heart and don’t get results, then you start doubting yourself. You wonder if you’re doing the right thing, if you’ve made the correct choices. When a film like THMS is received the way it was by the industry and audiences, then it is a fulfilling and satisfying feeling. It was a huge boost to my morale. I got many calls from people in the industry, and now, I will carry on believing in myself and doing the work that I want to.”

Ask him about his 2017 show, Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon 3, which didn’t generate ratings and was pulled off air after just three months, and he says, “This is a lesson one has to learn: not everything will work out. Your job is to do your work and not be affected by results or success and failure. Don’t be affected when people tell you that you are phenomenal or your projects aren’t working. There should be no scope for people to tell you who you are. When people tell me something, I listen to it and don’t let affect me in anyway.”

These days, Barun is back on the sets shooting for Ekta Kapoor’s web series. “I loved the story of a dysfunctional family and my role in it. Working with Kay Kay Menon is phenomenal, as he is a sorted guy. His body of work is brilliant and we sit with the cast to chat during breaks. The entire cast is a fun bunch of people to work with.”
