Karishma Tanna is excited about 2018 — the actor’s kitty currently includes Ekta Kapoor’s fantasy drama, in addition to Rajkumar Hirani’s upcoming film, starring Ranbir Kapoor. In her nearly two decades on TV — she started off with the superhit TV show, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, in 2000 — Karishma has worked in many serials, and even tried her luck in films. She took a brief break from the small screen, but returned to TV with the reality show, Bigg Boss, and is currently starring in the third season of a popular show that earlier starred actor Mouni Roy. We caught up with Karishma to talk about doing a big ticket show on the small screen, healthy competition among actors, and more.

With two TV shows and a cameo in Rajkumar Hirani’s upcoming film, 2018 looks quite busy for you.

Yes, I am very excited. I am shooting for Ekta’s weekend show, but I haven’t finalised the other serial yet. As for Hirani sir’s film, I am looking forward to it. It is a big deal to be part of the project. Initially, I shot a cameo in the film, but he told me that he liked my acting so much that he gave me a song with Ranbir Kapoor.

Your new show isn’t a daily soap. Was that one of the reasons why you signed it?

Yes. As it’s a weekend show, it doesn’t take up much of my time. I stayed away from TV, because I was looking for good content, and I am glad my new show has quality content. I thought of trying again in TV after a long break, and I am glad to have got it. When actors have to shoot for 25 to 28 days a month, doing monotonous work makes you feel as if you’re stagnating.

Mouni Roy starred in the first two seasons of your current show, which catapulted her to fame and led to films with popular banners. Are you expecting similar levels of success?

No one can predict the future, but I hope for the best. I am very happy for Mouni, as the show’s success has taken her places. The content was good, she looked fabulous and many other things worked for the show and her. I am not saying I want her success to be replicated in my life, but as an actor, I want to go places and move ahead in my career too. Hopefully, with Hirani’s film, people will notice me. Usually when two or three actors work on a show, people expect fireworks, as everyone wants to stand out. How is working with

Anita Hassanandani like?

I have known Anita for years and we are friends. We haven’t shot together that much, as our stories aren’t intertwined. As for rivalry between actors, I haven’t done many daily soaps or too much TV to have faced anything like this. I think it is natural for two actors to feel insecure about each other’s role and screen time. Luckily, I have never experienced it. If it does happen with me, I will take it in the right spirit and learn from it.

No one can predict the future, but I hope for the best. I am very happy for Mouni, as the show’s success has taken her places. KARISHMA TANNA, ACTOR
