Pankaj wants to popularise kavi sammelans

- Sneha Mahadevan n

The first half of 2018 has been quite eventful for Pankaj Tripathi. From bagging the National Award for his performance in Newton (2017) to making his Tamil film debut with a Rajinikanthstarrer, he has had his hands full. He is also all set to debut in the digital world with a web series. Despite all the work, when it comes to pursuing his hobbies, the talented actor takes time out for attending kavi sammelans etc.

A source close to the actor reveals, “Pankaj has always been an advocate for furthering Hindi literature. An avid reader of literary works in Hindi, he has also been vocal about his love for kavi sammelans, which is an age-old tradition of the royal courts of India where famous poets would get together and recite their poems and also indulgence in musical repartees. Although kavi sammelans are a common concept, they aren’t as prevalent anymore.”

The source adds that Pankaj wanted to ensure that such events don’t become a forgotten art.

Talking about it, Pankaj says, “What takes a normal writer a few pages to explain, a poet will say in four lines. That is the beauty of poetry. Also, I love listening and talking at these events because they talk about all the social issues and word it beautifully. In an age where face-to-face social interaction is reducing, a sammelan or mushaira makes people come together where they can talk, discuss and debate, all through poetry. These events are necessary, more so now. And as an actor I am aware of the method in which poetry is delivered. There is a pause, the specific tone that is used, etc. All of that helps my acting and dialogue delivery too.”
