John Abraham’s next release — Milap Zaveri’s Satyameva Jayate — addresses relevant issues of corruption, molestation and violence against women in India today. “The film’s plot revolves around Independence Day. It’s called Satyameva Jayate, which is the national motto of India and means truth alone triumphs. It was always a conscious decision to release on this date. It is a film that inherently, in its DNA and in its soul, has independence and patriotism as a part of this story,” he says.

While action has always been John Abraham’s forte, Milap says he needed someone who also had a vulnerable side to him. “For John, being a part of this film is a departure because the action is not stylised. It is very raw, desi and emotional. It is powerful and it’s about protecting women and fighting corruption.” He adds, “John is always known as action Abraham but for me, he is my desi hulk. When he rips a door apart, it is a metaphor for ripping out corruption from the root. He addresses issues like attacks on women and molestation with his strength in the film.”

Milap says that he wrote the script with John in mind and he was fortunate that he agreed to be a part of the project. “He was my first and only choice. I always wrote this film for him and he was the first person I approached. There is a certain sincerity and goodness about John. He usually keeps to himself but in his heart, he is a crusader. And I wanted someone with that power and that goodness in my character,” says Milap.

Satyameva Jayate produced by T-Series and Emmay Entertainment, directed by Milap Zaveri releases on August 15, 2018.
