Tried the broken suit trend yet? Ranveer, Anil, Rajkummar, and Dulquer show how to ace it
While nothing looks more sophisticated on a man than a spiffy, sharp suit, style-savvy men all around are breaking the fashion mould and making the broken suit look cool — this is when a suit jacket is matched with trousers from another suit, treating them as separates. Bollywood actors Anil Kapoor, Ranveer Singh, Rajkummar Rao, and Dulquer Salmaan have shown how to ace this trend. Fashion experts say this look is great if done right, but can be tricky.
“While we’re now noticing this broken suit trend on our Bollywood men, Italians have been doing the mixing and matching of suits for a while now. They call it Spezzato, which means ‘broken’ in Italian — it breaks the monotony of predictable suits and make it more stylish,” says designer Dhruv Vaish.
Mastering the Spezzato trend isn’t that easy, though, because not everyone can visualise which suit jacket would complement which trousers from another suit. Stylist Vikram Seth shares that one should have an eye for colour co-ordination. “A navy blue jacket goes well with offwhite pants. A cherry-coloured suit jacket goes well with black pants. But don’t make the mistake of mixing your fabrics; that’d look bizarre. Always try to pick similar fabrics when you mix and match,” he says.
“How you accessorise the broken suit is also pertinent,” says designer Jenjum Gadi. “Make sure you have a printed pocket square to go with your double-breasted jacket, and a tie that can complement the look. Shoes should always be chosen keeping in mind the colour of your trousers.”
