Film-maker Aanand L Rai’s Tanu Weds Manu (2011) and Tanu Weds Manu Returns (2015), not just made the audiences laugh, but also had the cash registers ringing at the box-office. And for quite some time now, there have been speculations around the third instalment of the franchise.
Talking about his plans regarding the third part, Rai shares that he is interested in making the film, but that will only happen when he has a story that is “good enough”. Not divulging more, he adds that the star cast that includes actors R Madhavan, Kangana Ranaut and Jimmy Sheirgill, may still remain the same.
“The moment I am sure that I am going to make everyone laugh more [than what we have already done in the past], I will make the [third] film. Right now, I’m [totally busy] with Zero [his upcoming film starring Shah Rukh Khan], so there is no story in my head. But I can’t live without a story in my head, so, once I am out o Zero, yes, I will work on something and I will have something coming soon. But I will take my own sweet time to direct it,” he says.
Tanu Weds Manu, like its sequel, was a hit, and for that matter his latest production, Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi also had a successful first part. When asked about how easy or difficult it is to live up to the expectations that come with instalments of a franchise, he says, “Whether it is a sequel or an instalment, it is a story, which is being narrated. You have a few characters, whom you know from before, but this time there is something new that is happening [to them]. So everything again boils down to the kind of story you are going to narrate… In that case, a little more expectation from the audience is always better.”
Rai is currently readying for the release of his next production, Manmarziyaan, starring Abhishek Bachchan, Taapsee Pannu and Vicky Kaushal. He recently visited
