He is riding high on the accolades that he has received for his performance in Manmarziyaan. But of late, Abhishek Bachchan has been in the news for another film — the Dostana sequel. In fact, a few days back, film-maker Karan Johar rubbished all the rumours of Dostana 2, after rumour mills went on an overdrive about a sequel to the 2008 film. Now, Abhishek — who is in a “very happy and focused mind-space” right now — has also dismissed all the talks around the sequel.

“I spoke to Karan [Johar] about it, so I can tell you that it’s [the sequel] completely untrue. In fact, he has put a clarification out as well,” says Abhishek, about the rumours around the sequel, adding that however, he is “looking forward to it” whenever it happens. “Let’s see if Dostana 2 works out because it would be great. It would all depend on the script, right? If it’s a completely different script, it remains to be seen if there is any room for me or John [Abraham] in it. At the end of the day, it all depends on what kind of story they come up with,” he says.

Tell Abhishek that a number of fans want him and John to return in Dostana 2 and he says with a smile: “That’s very sweet but I think that should be Karan’s decision.” Earlier this year, Abhishek completed 18 years (he debuted with Refugee; 2000) in the Hindi film industry. But the interesting question is: has it been a challenging journey, especially due to the weightage that his surname carries? “You know, right at the start of my career, when I was working on my first film, I knew if that’s what I am going to concentrate on, or if I allow myself to even think about it, I am going to crumble under that pressure,” he says.

The actor admits that what his parents and family have achieved is “too immense”. “So, I was like, ‘I am just going to switch it off’. I was clear that at the end of the day, people may come to see my [debut] film because of whose son I am. But after that, if I am not any good, it won’t matter whose kid I am. So, the idea has been to concentrate on myself, do the job to the best of my ability and channelise all the energy into my work,” he signs off.

Right at the start, when I was working on my first film, I knew if that’s what I am going to concentrate on, or if I allow myself to even think about it, I am going to crumble under that pressure. ABHISHEK BACHCHAN, ACTOR
