Sunny Deol weighs in on the #MeToo debate

The ongoing #MeToo movement against sexual harassment keeps gathering momentum, as more and more celebs from all walks of life open up about their encounters. Hollywood especially has been instrumental, but Bollywood has largely stayed away from the subject, even when casting couch — as many have admitted over the years — is a reality in the industry. Why the hesitation, you’d wonder? We ask Sunny Deol, who has been a part of Hindi cinema for 35 years, for his take.

“Let the world be, let’s not hunt for things,” says Sunny, who admits that the social evil has been plaguing the world for a long time, but asks, “Why do we need to get into why they haven’t come across, or somebody has come across? Or this is what the world is doing. That’s the problem, everything has to be brought out!”

He cites an example to explain his point: “Pehle bhi bolte the ‘arre yahaan baarish ho gayi, yahan garmi ho gayi’. Now we publish everything, ‘Arre, it’s 40 degrees today, it’s so hot’. That’s what we have become. I don’t follow all these things, I don’t bother about them, because the world has been existing for millions and billions of years. People have been existing, things have been happening. It’s just the way we bring it up or across nowadays.”

On the professional front, Sunny was recently seen in the third instalment of the comedy franchise, Yamla Pagla Deewana, with brother Bobby and father Dharmendra.

One of the most active stars in the ’80s and ’90s, he has slowed down considerably on the number of films he takes up. Asked why is that, the actor says, “One doesn’t plan. As a matter of fact, when I go back to see myself, I see most of the time I have had health issues which I have not been working on. Of late, I have been caught up with direction, ever since I took it up. I was busy with one-two projects (as a director), including the sequel of Ghayal and my son Karan’s debut. I had to stay away from acting a little bit, but there’s a film here and there I keep doing.”

How’s Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas (Karan’s debut) shaping up? “It is shaping up according to my expectations, but I can only talk about it when we are ready with it,” Sunny signs off.
