I don’t feel like an integral part of the industry: Barun Sobti

Barun Sobti, a popular name on Indian television, is looking forward to his next project, a web series. But that’s not all that’s keeping him in the news. Most often, when big-budgeted TV projects are announced, his name is inadvertently rumoured to be part of them, including a recent Ekta Kapoor production. Talking about the speculations, he says, “I am the only one who knows the truth and nothing can change that. I don’t want to shout from rooftops and clarify rumours. There is no point to it. I don’t bother with rumours.”

The Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon actor has been a part of films and television shows and every time, he signs on a project, it is called his ‘comeback’. He remains unfazed about it. “Yes, that happens (laughs). I don’t feel like an outsider or an integral part of the industry either. When I am not working, I am not working. I don’t socialise or attend events, etc. These days, people do certain things to be called an actor, which is disheartening. Some people become actors due to their PR. I am not trying to network or maintain relations for the sake of it. You will see me out and about only when I am working or when I am promoting a project. I am sticking to this profession, as I absolutely love acting. I am bearing with the rest of the paraphernalia that comes with it,” says Barun, who starred in the film Tu Hai Mera Sunday (2016).

Though he is working on the digital medium, he is not so active on social media. Ask him why and the Tanhaiyan actor says, “I am good at acting and I am sticking to that. I am bad with dealing with people on social media. I don’t read comments either. On social media, you don’t know who is who. I think social media gives way too much power to the people, meaning you can attack anyone by being anonymous. It would be great if people knew how to use social media, but sadly they don’t. Very few people know how to use power, and everything on social media is about money. Many people who have huge number of followers are busy using that power in a commercial way.”
