Here’s all you need to know before you get pierced

- Susan Jose susan.jose@htlive.com

From traditional set-ups to pop culture, piercings have found a place in almost every strata of modern society. They also double up a a fashion statement, and that is especially true prior to Navratri, when many take their style to the next level by opting for new piercings that can be flaunted throughout th nine-day dance celebrations.

While getting pierced is often considered a simple process than getting a tattoo, is important to pay careful attention to how it is done, an who does it, too.

PREPIERCING CARE

Always run a background check on the piercer. Explore what kind of work the person has done and check if any of their former clients have had any issues with their piercings. Also, make sure you choose the right metal and the right kind of jewellery. Some people are allergic to certain metals, and then there are those, whose skin will not handle jewellery with stones, etc. This is why it is better to not make a decision without doing the required research.

GUN VERSUS NEEDLE

Piercings are done in two ways: with a needle or with a hand-held piercing gun. Sunny Bhanushali, tattoo artist and founder, Aliens Tattoo Studio, suggests sticking to the traditional style. “A professional will never recommend a piercing gun, because although they are quick and cheap, they do not promise accuracy. A piercing gun pierces your skin and shoots out that part of your skin, whereas, a piercing needle actually pierces your skin by just tearing through i The torn skin then joins up again during the natural healing process. I would suggest one to always go for piercing needles, as they are hygienic and safe. These needles are freshly opened each time and never reused,” says Bhanushali, adding, “Also, remember, a gun cannot be sterilised completely.”

POSTPIERCING CARE

Despite using sterilised instruments, piercings can ge infected if you do not follow the correct aftercare procedures . Rahul Gaikwad, tattoo artist, RK Tattoo And Piercing Studio, says, “Often, people are excited about the piercing process and do not have the patience to wait for it to heal completely. Piercings are high maintenance. Do not touch your piercing unnecessarily or put your weight on it. Also, clean the area twice-a-day. Do not wear tight clothing in case of belly button piercings, as they prevent air from entering. Cover ear piercings if you use a lot of hair products.”

Lastly, if there is any irritation or discomfort, visit a specialist as soon as you can.
