Harshvardhan Kapoor believes in signing the right films that appeal to him than being part of several films. Even though it may seem like a slow and steady approach, the intent and purpose of a film matters more to him. With a thriller, and the much-awaited Abhinav Bindra biopic in the pipeline, the actor talks about his growing-up years, family and future plans.

You have a serious sort of an image...

I am not a very social guy. I am not an extrovert. I am shy, and not good with large crowds. I enjoy conversations.

How important is formal training for acting?

It is important. But then you also have some unbelievably talented actors, who are ruling the industry. They may not be trained but learnt on the job. So, it’s about raw talent and having the right people to use that talent. Having said that, an acting class is certainly only going to help you.

Do you have any onset memories of your father, Anil Kapoor’s films?

I really don’t have many on-set memories. I didn’t spend much time on the sets. And if you are not part of the film-making process, sets can get boring. At a very young age you’d rather be in school, engaging in extracurricular activities or playing a sport instead.

What kind of movies have you grown up watching?

I’ve grown up watching different kinds of movies from all over the world, Hindi films as well. But the so-called masala films never excited me much. As a viewer, they never appealed to me.

Besides acting, what are you inclined towards?

I like to write. I studied screenwriting for four years. After I am a little more settled in my acting career, maybe I’d like to write a film one day. I don’t mean 20 years later, but in the near future, may be after four or five years.

Is direction also on your mind? It’s the ultimate dream. With direction, there are many technical things you need to know and manage. It’s the scariest thing in the world, which is why I want to do it. Sometimes, a director has to make people feel miserable to get a certain performance. If an actor is too comfortable, you have to make him or her uncomfortable, so you get what you want. I feel a director has to be a master manipulator.

The socalled masala films never excited me much. As a viewer, they never appealed to me. HARSHVARDHAN KAPOOR, ACTOR
