It was really cold in Moscow but I enjoyed being in the city,” says Barun Sobti, who returned to Mumbai after a quick visit to the Russian capital. Though he had gone to attend a Bollywood Film Festival, he also met many of his Russian fans from various fan clubs there. “People across the world are nice to me (smiles). I was a bit surprised to know that I had fans there but it was really sweet to meet them and talk to them.”

After the huge success of his TV show Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon?, Barun ventured into Bollywood with films such as Main Aur Mr Riight (2014) and Tu Hai Mera Sunday (2017). He also starred in web series Tanhaiyan (2017), The Great Indian Dysfunctional Family (2018) and a short film titled, Derma recently. The actor admits that the roles he gets on the digital medium are much better than TV. “When you do different kinds of projects and people love them, it motivates you to keep going further down the path,” he says.

He played the broody intense hero and lover-boy kind of roles in the initial phase of his career but Barun admits that of late, he has realised what works for him. He says, “Every actor needs little time to figure out what works for them as an actor. When anyone starts, you do conventional roles. In the initial days of my career, I wasn’t confident and I don’t have a career plan even now. But after doing the last few projects, I know what I am enjoying more than other roles and the genre that works for me. Actors face a lot of pressure as they are the face of

any film or TV show but they also benefit from that as they get a lot of publicity, too.”

He also points out that the digital medium has opened up a whole new world for actors. “I am in a space where I want to push my limits and I am discovering myself along the way. I am getting a lot of work on the web and I don’t want to leave this space right now. I am getting a whole variety of roles unlike in films or TV. Films, TV and web not only reflect the intellect of society but also influence the intellect of the society. Content should shape the youth and we have powerful mediums at our disposal. If we keep feeding people what they like, as it is economy driven business, then there is no point.”
