If you always dismissed polka dots thinking that they are immature and childish, it’s time to change your mind. You have missed out on one of the biggest fashion trends in history that was favoured by style icons such as Marilyn Monroe and Diana, the Princess of Wales. This fun and cheerful vintage staple has got a thumbs up from fashion forward Bollywood divas such as Sonam K Ahuja, Alia Bhatt and Ananya Panday. Designer Sabyasachi recently presented his own interpretation of polka dots in his ethnic-wear collection. The trend has been popping up on the global ramp, with luxury labels playing around imaginatively with dots.
High street brands such as Zara and H&M and even flea market stalls in the city are cashing in on the trend, offering a range of polka dotted fashion items. Circular patterns have been an inspiration for designer Nikhil Thampi as well. He says, “International and domestic fashion weeks are seeing the return of retro. Polka dots are eternal and no one gets bored of them,” he says.
Stylist Divyak D’Souza says polka dots have a timeless visual-appeal. “Polka dots are youthful yet futuristic and one can always add a contemporary spin to them,” he says. To get those Insta-worthy pictures rocking the style, he recommends introducing polka dots to one’s wardrobe with accessories such as polka-dotted scarves or glass frames.
Designer Nachiket Barve suggests keeping polka dots the highlight of your look.
