Ranveer and Varun are quite involved in photoshoots: Rohan
Rohan Shrestha began his career as a celebrity photographer and has also shot several commercials over a short span of his career. However, the photographer recently branched out and shot his first coffee table book in collaboration with National Basketball Association (NBA) titled Home Court – Inside India’s Unique Basketball Communities. Rohan says it was his love for basketball that made him take up the project. “I have been a fan of basketball ever since I was a kid. So, I was excited,” says Rohan. Excerpts.
How was your overall experience shooting the coffee table book?
The uniqueness and diversity of India — shooting in such unique places, meeting different people and sharing cultural experiences was amazing. Being raised in Mumbai, to see Sikkim and smaller towns in Tamil Nadu, gave me a great cultural understanding of our country.
Otherwise, we don’t normally get out of our comfort zones. We may read about them but to actually see all of these places and experience it, and to get an opportunity to photograph was rather different.
How did you begin your career?
I started shooting for magazines in 2009 and I got my first cover in 2010. I’ve mainly done fashion and film photography. But I believe in learning more, and hopefully, there are more career opportunities for me. I’ve seen a transition from when I began to where I am now.
From the actors, who is the most hands-on when it comes to photoshoot?
Both Ranveer Singh and Varun Dhawan are quite involved in photoshoots. It’s always fun to work with them because they are creatively inclined as well. I get along well with them and have known them for a while now, so that also helps. We’ve got fantastic results and had amazing experiences. We’ve done some memorable shoots together.
A lot of people are trying their hand at photography. That’s a good thing, as it adds so many perspectives in the market. ROHAN SHRESTHA, PHOTOGRAPHER
One celebrity you’ve not shot with but you would like to.
I have shot with Mr (Amitabh) Bachchan once. But I’d like to work with him again.
As for photoshoots, do Bollywood actors garner the maximum response?
Bollywood actors do sell a lot.
Both Bollywood and cricket play a huge role in the photography and advertising industries.
How’s the current Indian photography scene?
It’s growing exponentially. A lot of people are trying their hand at photography. That’s a good thing, as it adds so many perspectives in the market.
