When an actor bags one international prestigious project after another, moving abroad seems like a natural shift. But actor Ali Fazal is clear that he doesn’t want to settle overseas. Despite a lucrative career in the West, the actor still sees himself as an Indian artiste, who wants to dabble in good roles regardless of platforms or languages they are created in.

Though he has recently wrapped up his next Hollywood film, Death on the Nile, co-starring Gal Gadot, Ali is in talks with several filmmakers in India for his future work. He says he believes that in today’s day and age, an actor can pursue multiple acting careers simultaneously across platforms and countries. Talking about it, he says, “Language cannot be a barrier for any actor, neither can their geographical location or their ethnicity. My motive is to create a world filled with great content with people who are so invested in their art that where they come from ceases to matter.”

Ali feels it’s imperative for actors to be fluid if they want to showcase their versatility. Moreover, due to the content boom by virtue of OTT platforms, an actor’s fluidity has come into the spotlight. Ali wants to remain a true actor who is able to sink his teeth into meaty parts. He adds, “We are no longer in that phase where one has shift to Hollywood to work in Hollywood. I am going to continue flying in and out of India for work. For some time, I have wanted desperately to do a film in the south — be it Tamil, Telugu or Malayalam, because they are making some world-class cinema in these languages. That’s my endeavour, to seek out good work in every language possible, and find characters that challenge and enthuse me to push myself beyond my comfort zone and absorb their complexities.”
